The territorial museum has a multiple vocation for the well-being and the safeguard of our heritage. This achievement is the result of large-scale community action spawned by the Lion’s club, and the entire population of Saint Barthélemy. It was born for the fortnight of heritage which was carried out on the occasion of the first Lorient / Saint-Barth transatlantic race in May 1989 and resulted in the Municipal Heritage Museum by deliberation of the Municipal Council on June 02 1989. Following the passage of Saint-Barthélemy in Territorial Collectivity on July 15, 2007, it now bears the name of the Territorial Museum of St Barthélemy.

Located at the Pointe de Gustavia, it leaves the old prefabricated premises, temporarily used, and since 1995 occupies the ground floor of the Wall House building, an old building in ruins for more than a century, renovated to become a welcoming cultural place. the Museum and the Library.

Saint-Barth of origin, Saint-Barth of today or Saint-Barth of heart, the Museum offers to all, an astonishing cruise on the caravel of time and memory for a rediscovery of a profound Saint-Barthélemy, which can only reveal itself to passionate souls.

Discover in order to understand… Understand in order to love… and to love better.

You will be able to dive into the very heart of the history of what was once called “OUANALAO”, go through tumultuous centuries before the time of the arrival of the first settlers, most of whom were born. Watercolors, objects, documents will guide you through the Swedish period before introducing you to the important role played by the Church in the history of the island. You will discover the charm of the traditional habitat, the thankless work of salt extraction, the moving but painful relationship of Saint-Barth with the sea, the subtlety of working with straw and many other treasures that it offers. You have to know how to discover in order to better know how to protect and thus better preserve the harmony of our environment. And then, trait of this character which never lets itself be defeated. The small traditional orchestra, a vestige of happy weddings and neighborhood balls …

But above all, the Museum is the story of Saint-Barth, which through its work and tenacity has made and must continue to do for this island, the one we want for tomorrow. For any native or lover of the island, a visit to the Museum is a sure way to water its roots so that the buds are stronger. You who disembark, come and see our Museum. Far from illusory advertisements, you will touch the harsh realities, the deep basis of this love that you will no longer be able to refuse to bear for this modest rock.
However, there are still many themes to develop, many documents to complete, words that can never be pronounced well enough.

“The words that have not been said are the flowers of silence …”. They say. May they, these flowers fruit in a harmony of life as one can only find in the openness and the understanding in front of the other, under the azure sky of a paradise with the serene future and fraternal. “
