A veritable treasure trove lies hidden beneath the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, a wonderful underwater world known well by the natives of Saint Barth, as they have always been drawn to the sea. Generation after generation of local fisherman brought in the catch of the day as well as shellfish and mollusks, and they are still using traditional methods of fishing today.
As many as 183 species of fish populate the waters around the island, with 54 different kinds of coral and 60 varieties of sea sponges in various colors and forms to embellish our reefs.
A single dive allows you to see the biodiversity of the marine world in Saint Barthélemy, and the life that teems below the surface. This marine life is protected in certain zones that are controlled by the Marine Park, which was created in 1996 and has had significant results. Studies done by the scientists from the Antilles-Guyana University show that the fish population multiplies faster within the protected areas than outside its boundaries.
There are 20 dive spots within the Marine Park, where the anchoring of boats is prohibited. Instead there are mooring buoys that help protects the reefs and control the number of boats in the area. In Saint Barth, the dive boats take just a total of 13 people, including the professional staff, which precludes a “factory” for divers! Once you are under the water, you will understand the importance of these security measures as fish and turtles swim toward you and you only meet other divers by chance.
Outside of the Marine Park? The dive clubs also visit other sites where they have voluntarily applied the same rules and regulations comprising fixed moorings, no anchoring, and one boat per site.
Divers of all levels can enjoy the warm, transparent water, and calm seas that exist year round to the west of the island. Beginning divers at Gros Islets will be sure to encounter turtles. Those who are more experienced most likely explore the three ship wrecks in the Marine Park, or perhaps the small caves on the small islands to the north of Saint Barth. The diving instructors can also take you to the right spot to see lobsters, sunken ships, or the gray sharks at Pain de Sucre… And all of these sites are just 10 minutes by boat from Gustavia or Grand Cul de Sac, in the sheltered waters of Saint Barth. Grab a swimsuit, a towel, and take the plunge!
Here in Saint Barth, diving means pure pleasure, with maximum depths of 30 meters and perfect conditions!
Diving on this small island means small clubs, and diving in Saint Barth is synonymous with high-quality service. All of the dive professionals have national diplomas and are PADI instructors who meet all of the French requirements in terms of training, equipment, and security. The clubs have also signed a partnership agreement with the Marine Park, which means they adhere to strict rules, such as not wearing gloves while diving so as to not harm the coral. Your club can provide all of the gear you need to take a dive, refreshments included.
St Barth boasts beautiful beaches, an unrivaled lifestyle, great dining, luxury boutiques, yachts, a relaxed ambiance, and the cerulean sea in all directions! Diving in St. Barthélemy is the guarantee of a moment well spent, a time to relax, and a chance to enjoy a new adventure.
